Distancing

Distancing is another defense mechanism. In this case, we do not project the material to be repressed onto others, but insert another object between ourselves and the object of our desire, or compartmentalize our feelings and cognitions.
This way, we escape the pain of the unbearable closeness of the object of our own desire. Although the insertion itself can be conscious, it remains hidden from ourselves why we do that.

Well...mine is totally conscious, but still used as a preservation method. Why act when I can stay in my comfort zone and contemplate what could have been?
